Vanliga frågor och svar

Why is my PDF still large after compressing it?

Most of a PDF's size comes from images, so a file with few images, or images that are already small, won't shrink much, and the result message tells you when the size couldn't be reduced. Try the High level, set a target file size, or turn on Convert to grayscale under Custom Settings. For an image-only scan, turn on Rasterize pages there too.

How much does each compression level reduce image quality?

Low re-encodes images at JPEG quality 80 and downsamples anything above 200 DPI, Medium uses quality 50 and 150 DPI, and High uses quality 20 and 72 DPI. Lossless leaves images untouched and only optimizes fonts and file structure. Medium is the default and reads fine on screen; Low is the safer choice for anything that will be printed.

Will I still be able to select and search text after compression?

Yes. Compression recompresses images, subsets fonts, and cleans up the file structure without touching the text layer, so selection, search, and links keep working. Rasterize pages only applies to image-only scans and is skipped whenever a document has selectable text, unless you turn on Override content protection under Custom Settings.

Does compressing remove metadata from my PDF?

Compression keeps document details such as the title and author. It drops embedded page thumbnails and private data that editing apps leave behind, and a PDF/A file loses its PDF/A label unless you turn on Preserve PDF/A under Custom Settings. To strip document details as well, use Remove Metadata.

Can I compress a scanned PDF?

Scanned PDFs are full-page images, so they respond well to compression. Medium or High downsamples the scans in place and keeps any OCR text layer. If the scan has no text layer at all, turning on Rasterize pages under Custom Settings can make it smaller still.

What do the Custom Settings do?

They fine-tune Hyper Compress. You can set image quality and maximum resolution, control how fonts are subset and merged, flatten annotations, form fields, or links, remove thumbnails and other hidden data, rasterize image-only scans, keep PDF/A conformance, and turn on Brotli. Override content protection lets you compress signed PDFs by removing their signatures and rasterize pages that have text. Picking a compression level resets the rest to that level's values.

Can I compress a PDF to a specific size like 1 MB?

Yes. Enter the size under Target File Size and Hyper Compress searches for the best image quality that still fits. If the file can't get that small, you get the smallest version it can make and a note saying so. For common limits there are pages with the target already filled in, such as Compress PDF to 1MB.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server for compression?

No. Compression runs Hyper Compress, BentoPDF's own engine, compiled to WebAssembly and served with the app, so everything happens on your device. You can compress one file or a whole batch, which comes back as compressed-pdfs.zip, and none of them leave your computer.
